Sage words from Rosemary, the White Rabbit. Though she spelt Parsley wrong.

A friend of mine was running late cooking her family dinner one day and said out loud “I need more time!” and her helpful sub-teen daughter went into the garden and got her some.

In the UK we have (more had, now) a BBC Science documentary series, going since 1964, called Horizon. One nice desert island cartoon had our guy on his tiny sandy lump with a palm tree, endless 360° ocean view and a TV showing Horizon’s title card.

Hilburn’s definitely alluding to Tonya. I’ve never gotten into Scooby Do, but aren’t the people on the podium Scooby Do characters?

Nor am I into Scooby-Do, but I believe “if it weren’t for those meddling kids!” is a catchphrase given to villains there.

So why is the White Rabbit growing basil then?
(I’d go for a pun, but I never know how to pronounce it — I tend to say it Sybil Fawlty style, “Basil!”, but I’m pretty sure that’s wrong, but then to say it like “basel cell carcinoma” seems wrong, too, maybe because there I want to pronounce it like the Swiss city…)

zbicyclist and Mitch4: Yes, those are Scooby Do characters, and yes., that’s a catchphrase on the show. Or was 30+ years ago when I last saw it!

For context, at the end of the show after the villain’s identity was revealed one of the Scooby gang would explain what the villain was trying to do and how they were trying to do it, to which the villain would reply “Yes, and I would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for those meddling kids”.

I looked it up to see if the villains really did say, “I would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for you meddling kids.” According to the Scooby Doo wiki at Fandom.com, many of them do use some form of that phrase, although in the early years it was rare. Nowadays, they have numerous variations on the quote. The wiki has a page titled: List of “And I Would Have Gotten Away With It Too, If It Weren’t For You Meddling Kids” Quotes.

I figured the parsely spelling was deliberate, but couldn’t quite parse the reason for it.

And here I thought the “Meddling Kids” bit was just something my grandparents (or theirs) came up with.

Grrr. I hate the occasional, “This comment could not be posted” situations. I generally don’t recover the text when I go back. I will try again.

Yes, that is Daphne (left) and Velma. Plus the guy who isn’t Shaggy. I have heard, but it seems unlikely, that fan renderings of the ladies can be found on the internet. What such artwork might entail, I couldn’t speculate.

I think the herb comic would have been better if the line were, “You never have enough thyme.”
