I don’t think he was trying to avoid serving her, I think he was just getting high on his own supply, overdid it, and ran out right before she got there.

Yeah, the “look both ways before drinking” wasn’t because he found an abandoned stand, it’s because he didn’t want to get caught drinking the lemonade.

I think he was looking for customers, didn’t see any, quickly got bored, and drank all the lemonade.

Ah, so in the first panel, you’d say he’s checking to see if “the coast is clear” before swilling the goods. I saw it as a double-take upon seeing Gina coming down the street.

As noted, Dennis likes Gina. If it were Margaret, then there’d be a point. But that doesn’t look like a double-take to me. It’s a look both ways move.

What I find confusing about this cartoon is that in the last panel, Dennis’ face and arms make him look like he’s reproaching Gina for something, as if it’s her fault that he’s out of lemonade, and she’s not really welcome there.

If Dennis had a befuddled expression in the last panel — as if to say, “I just don’t know why the lemonade sold out so fast!” — then the punchline would have made more sense to me.
