I think what they’re implying is that gay men are said to like Broadway theatrical shows, and thus he could appreciate the guy’s productions if he were gay. That’s my guess.
My guess is he just wishes he were gay so he could date/marry this guy.
Yes, Trish Lee has it. The “excuse” is actually a love song, and the boss is so impressed with the “production value” of the song that he almost wishes he could appreciate it on that level.
