They are not free-range humans, in their little cubicles like factory-farmed chicken.
Congratulations, Dvandom got it done in one.
I think a subsidiary joke (okay, I at first took it as the main thing) is that they are “going to lunch together” but just virtually. Still, they get the benefits one would expect, sharing conversation and relaxation with a friend. Since people surely do this for real, maybe it’s not much of a joke.
(Quibble: Maybe it shouldn’t be over their phones that they connect. It would be more like the real thing if they could use their desktop computers and whatever conferencing software the company provides.)
Deety, that was my thought too. A lack in that practice would be that you can’t share/exchange food, which is why it’s a bit of consolation that they got the same thing.
I missed a good moment by not sticking with trying to understand it; I had been thinking, “man! it’s hard and annoying to see through all these people; why?”
deety – I have never worked for a large company (at least since computers became common – last time worked for a company was 1974 when I sold fine jewelry in a local household items department store), so I don’t know for sure, but I would figure they would not want what they said to be on the company computers for others in the company to read – if they are even allowed to use the business computers for personal use – so used their personal cell phones instead.
