Still in a mask? … Oh!

This appearance of “Yes, I’m Hot in This” on 29 July 2024 was a return to GoComics after an absence, with the previous publication marked as 06 September 2023. The GoComics comments for this strip were mostly on the “Welcome back!” theme, but with a few addressing the content. Her Patreon describes activities over the past year including an NBA nomination; but only indirectly talks about getting back into drawing cartoons.

(Marking as “Momentary CIDU” because it was a touch confusing at first, but not too hard to decode in general terms.)

No, she’s not a professional hoopster, you philistine!

It’s a reference to the “NBA nomination”, which, if not “National Basketball Association”… then what?

Still kind of opaque and certainly not friendly, but I figured out from the photo where her book has a button that says “National Book Award Finalist”, and from that I can figure, Oooooh! NBA…

Is the thing with the mask entirely that it is an emotional-disguise mask? Or is it initially supposed to pass for a medical mask?

“It’s somewhat political”… Her tears are for the Israel/Hamas war. But which she tries to keep hidden. The friend’s “Same” might be matching all of that, though readable as only saying same to “Fine”.

There isn’t anything in the strip above that explicitly indicates the reason for the tears (one could just as easily assume that this is a psychological comic, similar to Nick & Zuzu). The same is true for the strip published two days later. The political nature of the feature was first made absolutely clear in yesterday’s installment:

This raises a number of important questions, such as:

    1. 1 – While we are talking about genocide, can we at least have a side discussion on the subject of terrorism?
    2. 2 – If this is going to be a political comic, why is GoComics still permitting reader comments? They have disabled comments for all of their editorial cartoonists (or perhaps Huda Fahmy got the same kind of dispensation as Garry Trudeau did).
    3. 3 – Do we want to conduct this kind of discussion at CIDU?

Well, on point 3 we surely do not want a debate conducted here in CIDU comments. The original cartoon had its political content under cover as it were, so did not necessitate more than a minor acknowledgement.
