Cross-Cultural Calendars

This Macanudo strip might appear to be misdated to American readers:

… because the school year ended over a month ago. It turns out that the Argentinian school year begins in March, and doesn’t end until December. Nevertheless, the strip is still (slightly) misplaced, because Argentinian students go on their Winter break in July. Henrietta may not be at the beach, but she isn’t in school right now, either.

Misdated (but only just) for the UK too, as our county (Somerset) state school year ended in the last couple of days (midweek, which seems odd). There’s some variation – Wales finished last Friday. They go back 3rd September. Public (ie private) schools do their own thing – what was mine packed up Friday 4th July this year, and go back on the 5th September.

School here still starts Wednesday after Labor Day and runs to the end of June. It has always been that way and we were surprised to learn in other places school starts and ends earlier.

This has resulted in some oddities – one year Walmart here had the next year’s school supplies out before school had ended here!

Being a crazy child who actually loved going to school (well, except for having to get up so early) when the new school supplies came out I was so happy – I still wander the aisles looking at everything when they appear – as exciting as looking at the Christmas decorations when they come out for me. (Which became a lot more fun when the Jewish girl married an Italian Catholic guy and could actually BUY the Christmas stuff and use it.)

While I have no need for it – there is a loose leaf book with a really cute picture of a teddy bear on the cover that I have my eyes on. Robert said I should buy it, but it seems such a waste when I have all those old loose leaf books to use. Have “visited” with the bear twice and am still thinking about it.

(When one is not lucky enough to have children – one gets to keep being a child.)

Friday’s Macanudo strip presents a minor surprise for readers in the southern hemisphere, but is downright surreal anywhere north of the equator:
