Comics I Don't Understand

At the risk of being just a gullible, I’m going to say I pretty much believe this to have actually happened. (Though the explanatory notes usually seem a little off.)

The GPS one isn’t exactly funny, and is 100% real. Our Toyota (besides being poor at routing) also has nannyware that makes no sense. You can’t enter addresses while rolling–ok, that could make sense, but it knows whether there’s a passenger in the passenger seat, and could enable it in THAT case. But it WILL let you scroll through previous addresses–to a point. Then it stops and the nannyware kicks in, after you’ve scrolled through some number. Either it’s bad or it’s not!
Folks sell an aftermarket device that you plug into the harness. It has a button: when pressed, it confuses the sensors long enough to enter an address (or at least part of one–I’m not spending $300 for the thing). So now it’s button, GPS, oops, timed out, button, GPS…even safer!
Geezer alert! I had one of those Nehru jackets in 1968. It was that same color, too. I only wore it once, to a Bob Hope show at U of M my freshman year.
Yeah, I remember Nehru jackets being used as a form of geezer alert in a comic published in 1986!

(Following up on the Welsh translation meme)
When a number of British crime or detective shows I looked at included a number set in Wales, I started to notice when they had a scene at a police station, and the signage would say HEDDLU POLICE. My immediate logical conclusion was, Gee a lot of these seem to be taking place in that one same town, Heddlu.
I didn’t pick up on the absence of, say, any “Welcome to Heddlu” signs, or scenes at a “Heddlu Cafe”, and so on. But it did seem strange that all these shows had found different parts of the town of Heddlu to film, as they all looked different.
Well of course there was eventually a dawning, and I looked it up and found that “Heddlu” is Welsh for “Police”. And thus, all those HEDDLU POLICE signs were part of the bilingual public signage requirement in Wales.
So Mitch, I started manually typing in the Welsh from your sign, and yes, it says “I am not in the office”… (I actually had it translate to German, and stopped after the first bit, “Ich bin nicht im Büro”)
So now just prove it isn’t a photoshopped sign…
I’m not sure that email for ordering a lettered cake is a bad idea. It helps cut down on mishearing errors. Back in the day when classified ads were an important part of the US, one generally called in. There were the occasional oddities that seemed to be a miscommunication between caller and ad-taker.
Related to the Welsh translation, a Polish man named Prawo Jazdy was wanted in Ireland for more than 50 traffic violations. This was noticed when the traffic violation data was entered into a new computer system. They had a hard time finding this violator. Turns out “Prawo Jazdy” means “Driver’s License”. The Irish police authorities were awarded the Ig Nobel Prize in Literature in 2009 but declined to attend the ceremony.
This one seemed to fit…
Searching for “most embarrassing cake inscriptions” brings up plenty of them, including “Happy Birthday in French”, “Nothing”, “Just Write Happy Birthday”, “Happy Birthday Dick / Ha Ha Ha / Don’t Write That / His Name is Matt”.
Glad my sister just went with “Happy 95th Birthday”on my mom’s birthday cake. No errors were made in the writing or the cake itself.
Yes, my mom turned 95. It is nice to know that at least one family member has lived to be older than I am now – Dad, 3 grandparents, and 3 uncles all died when younger than I am now. (Okay, so two lived to be older than I am now – she and her father).
