Saturday Morning OYs – January 20th, 2024

This “dogged effort to learn a foreign language” has paid off!

And as my brother recently messaged me: Yo no soy marinara! Yo no soy marinara! Soy carbonara, soy carbonara, soy carbonara — por ti seré, por ti seré, por ti seré.

Re the sneeze joke, I used to work with a younger woman whom I would mercilessly Dad-joke. Once I found a cashew someone had dropped on the floor, so I walked over to her desk and showed it to her:Me: I just found this on the ground, but I don’t know what kind of nut it is. It’s not an almond, it’s not a pecan…Her: Cashew.Me: Gezundheit. It’s not a brazil nut or a macadamia…..At that point she was shooting laser beams out of her eyes through my forehead, so I wandered off.

@target, yeah it almost went into the LOL post tomorrow instead, but arguably fits OY on the basis of “language play in general”. Of course, that depends on recognizing cat-talk and dog-talk as languages ….

@padraig, my friend Alice in the 70s had a flirty-banter habit of responding to “Gesundheit!” as though she had heard “Goes in tight!”. (However it was more often in the mode of fending-off banter than encouragingly flirty — more “How would you know?” than “Maybe you’ll find out!”)

Bliss is only occasionally funny, IMO, but the art work is nearly always gorgeous. Is he still having Steve Martin write his jokes?

My Spanish is not very strong, and the translation I came up with didn’t make a lot of sense, so I ran it through a web translator site. The result was pretty much what I had come up with. So, what am I missing? Is it a play on some song lyrics?

Yes, do you remember “La Bamba”?

Yo no soy marinero, yo no soy marinero, soy capitán, soy capitán, soy capitán”
    I’m not a sailor, I’m the captain

There is a very old joke about a bilingual animal: A cat was chasing a baby mouse toward the mouse hole. Just as he was about to catch the mouse, the mother mouse came out of the hole and loudly barked like a dog at the cat. The cat was so startled he ran away. The mother mouse said to her child, “Now do you see the importance of learning a second language?”

I remember the bilingual animal as a carton from Playboy in the 1970s. Two cats are walking along and a dog comes charging at them. The one cat barks angrily and the dog stops and runs away. Barking cat turns to companion and says, “Sometimes it’s useful to know a second language”.

I wonder which of these versions is the original!
