    Philip has it @1.

P.S. For some odd reason, the traditional English name for this hairstyle is “Mohawk“, but in German they associate it with the entire Iroquois Confederacy, calling it “der Irokesenschnitt“. Neither name is historically accurate.

Why have you marked this as a CIDU? You say it’s “hair-raising” so clearly you understand that the prickles resemble a particular haircut. What is the part you don’t understand?

@ Pete (5) – That’s a long-standing tradition at CIDU, established in part by Bill Bickel, who frequently posted comics for which he was simply unsure whether his original interpretation was correct. Bill seemed to feel that whenever there was any doubt, “CIDU” was a more reliable category than “LOL”, even when his headline did reveal that he had the correct answer right from the beginning.

Pete, when it was sent in* by reader Targuman, he expressed complete bafflement. And that was also the initial reaction of members of the editorial team. For myself, I was really afraid this was suggesting stalking or child-abuse grooming (yes, with the cactus as the villain) and even worried that it might be too light-hearted a treatment of this rather dire topic!

So at that point it was completely a CIDU! When someone checked comments and also just came up with the Mohawk haircut explanation, we didn’t think it nexcessary to retract the post, or the CIDU category.

Fair point, maybe I should have avoided putting that “hair-raising” in the post title — intended as a small clue but perhaps constituting a spoiler. Okay, fair point as I acknowledge. Though I would add to the pleadings a technical note that, in general, when starting to edit a new post it is better to have the title in place before doing any Save, to avoid some minor trouble with the eventual “slug” and URL. So I was trying to “get it done” before writing the body and fetching the graphic, and didn’t pay enough attention to the spoiler possibility.

Mitch says “I was really afraid this was suggesting stalking or child-abuse grooming (yes, with the cactus as the villain) ”

Yes! Not so weird, I had that thought too. It’s the “hanging around my son” that prompts this reading — it attributes some action or practice to the cactus.

And conversely, the son picking up the hairstyle would have to come from the son hanging around the cactus, not the cactus hanging around the son.

Pete, as Mitch4 pointed out, I sent it in and I was not sure. The orientation of the cactus and the spikes on it did not immediately say “Mohawk” hairstyle to me. I thought they were simply cactus spikes. Also, we do not see the son so we have no reference. I wondered if it might have been the arm on the front as a nose (?), or …anything really. Now, assuming it WAS intended to be about the “haircut” I would simply say, with all do respect to the artist, it is poorly done. shrug
