@ Dana K – Perhaps “wishful thinking on the part of the authors“? Seriously, the visual gag is about as sophisticated as an exploding cigar, and extracting a single action syllable from the word “boomerang” doesn’t require rocket science. That’s all there really is to see here.
@ Maggie – Once again we come back to the fundamental principle that the “IDU” depends entirely on the individual reader involved. For me personally, IDU anything beyond “boom” = “explosion”, which of course leads to my second IDU: “…why the authors thought that this comic would be funny“. Your mileage may vary.
It’s a “boom”rang so it just goes “boom”, but doesn’t come back.

I’ll bet that it did “ring” back, at least in the poor victim’s ears.

OK, that’s good for the “boom”, but what makes it a “rang”?

I don’t think there’s quite a CIDU here.

I don’t think it’s very funny, but I still kinda get the joke.

Being a geezer, I just assumed it was something ‘the kids’ know. As in, anybody under 50.

Okay Boomer.
Sorry. It had to be said.

Chak, I thought much the same.
And still think there is something of a clue in how the product name contrives to erase the “boomer” version.

Until reading other comments, I thought he misread it as bomberang.
