I like ARE better. Babies imprint on the first being they see. Mandy Patinkin IS the watermelon vine.
I don’t think they’re angry. It’s more that they’re seedy characters (literally and figuratively) trying to break into Buni’s home.
Comics I Don't Understand

The same reason children hate their parents.
They look more contemptuous than angry.
He abandoned them.

Because he eats watermelons. In their eyes, he’s a cannibal.
