    They appear to be Canada geese. It might be easier to figure out the joke if we knew if they were migrating north or south. Unfortunately, they’re not migrating in either direction in the middle of January, which is the date on the comic.

    The thing they thought was an island was made of ice.
    It’s in the Arctic.
    Global warming is destroying the Artic icepack.

    Perhaps overthinking, but could this be a joke aimed at retirees?

    The geese chose the wrong island to migrate to as the ice is melting…a situation that retirees may relate to when they pack up everything they own and ‘migrate’ to ‘wrong’ tropical islands which are now being swallowed by rising sea levels or battered by previously unheard of tropical storms due to climate change.

    This is the Spring migration (based on timing), so they were flying north for the summer. They overshot and are now on a small, shrinking ice floe. Of course, it doesn’t matter, since they’re geese and can just fly away again.
