Of course, the Roanoke colonists did leave a forwarding address (the known-at-the-time Krotoan community), and no one thought it was at all mysterious until centuries later, when someone decided to gin it up as a Big Mystery.

As for the 7 Hobbits, there’s this fan theory that at some point Gandalf sired children with a particularly ambitious Took lass, hence his continuing interest in the Tooks and Took-adjacent Hobbits…just looking after his descendants.

You can have a friend, lawyer, gardener, chef, assistant, spouse, etc. and none of that implies ownership.

I suppose the Rubes one is playing on the phrase “jump for joy.” In the dog restaurant, it seems that he’s asking for a, er, um, mobile rest room.

The comic does include “CROATOAN” written on a tree in the background!

That said, as I understand it, the question remaining is not so much whether the colonists intended to relocate to Croatoan, but rather whether they were successful in doing so, and whether they integrated with the locals or left (or were slaughtered).

It’s clear that BC intends only to appeal to Boomers and older millennials.

Nobody younger will remember adult magazines with foldout centerfolds.

I’m sure “CROATOAN” on the tree meant “We’re going to try to make it to Croatoan”, not “Hey, we all went to Croatoan, and I came all the way back to write this, and now I have to go all the way to Croatoan all over again.”
