Man, the term “cremains” bothers the hell out of me when used in real life. It’s just not the appropriate time for a little fun wordplay. They’re the remains of a human being. The comic isn’t bad though.
“Remains” was already a euphemism for “corpse” or “body”. “Ashes”, the previous term for cremains, is inaccurate since bones are typically pulverized rather than burnt; most of the actual ash is from the wood.
And it leaves me wondering if it had cranberries added to it.
Is there any word with more synonyms than “drunk”?
Boise Ed: Certain body parts. (He wrote carefully, to avoid filtering)
I saw a Reddit question by a non-native speaker confused by this bit in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy:
No, don’t move,” he added as Arthur began to uncurl himself, “you’d better be prepared for the jump into hyperspace. It’s unpleasantly like being drunk.”
“What’s so unpleasant about being drunk?”
“You ask a glass of water.”
Then there was the mortician who in his spare time invented a new, improved “coffee lightener” to compete with Coffee-Mate and Cremora. He named it Cream-Mate.
