Getting access to the comments on the GoComics website is confusing. This is a CIDU, not so much a Comic I Don’t Understand as Commenting I Don’t Understand.
I see this at the bottom of all the comics I follow: an icon with zero comments indicated:

When I click on that icon, I get junk:

This occurs for me on all comics, and I am a GoComics subscriber. I just figured that the “new, improved” GoComics website has somehow messed up commenting.
BUT:
Dirk the Daring sent me a couple of links from GoComics, one of which is below. In both of these cases, I’m seeing lots of comments (and I’m still signed in to my account; you can see the “Follow” indicator and my alias below the comic).

and, yet, when I pull up the Wizard of Id page via my favorites, I once again get zero comments.

DIFFERENCE IN LINKS:
It’s important for this discussion that I mention I am writing this 2025/08/23, although you are reading this a few days later.
https://www.gocomics.com/wizardofid/2025/08/23 is Dirk the Daring’s link, which gives comments.
https://www.gocomics.com/wizardofid is the link that connects via my favorites, which does not give comments. But if I hit the “previous” button, I get the previous day’s comic, with a link of https://www.gocomics.com/wizardofid/2025/08/22, which again has no comments.
But if I change that “22” at the end to “23”, then I do get comments on the 8/23 comic, and if I now hit the “previous” button to get the previous day’s comic, the comic comes with comments, even though the URL of https://www.gocomics.com/wizardofid/2025/08/22 is the same!
NET:
All of this is partly a rant, and partly information that might, or might not, be helpful to those looking for comments on the GoComics website.
But this is a CIDU site, this Wizard of Id provides a few confusing aspects. He’s dreaming of laptops? He’s tapping into the Sydnew Sweeney jeans “controversy” (hard to take seriously a “controversy” that, IMO, mainly exists in order to provide more publicity to the manufacturer).

I can’t duplicate your problem, but my guess is that you have a pop-up blocker or something. Comments on the main page are in-line, but comments from the favorites list are in a pop-up.
I do get comments in a pop up, but my issue is that for me it takes forever and a day for that popup to populate with ads and eventually the comments.
About the Wizard of Id: Not to be too nitpicky, but that is clearly a desktop, not a laptop :-)
Doesn’t change your question though. Apparently, the wizard has dreams about the future. Maybe he cannot understand what he’s seeing? Or he does and thinks it’s all pointless?
@guero: You’re on to something. In Edge (my default) I had “no pop-ups” set, which may be the Edge default. Whether I turned on popups globally or had GoComics.com as an exception, I still get the same behavior. Same in Chrome, although I didn’t fiddle with the settings as much.
So I tried Firefox, and I do see the comments in a pop-up window and there’s the number of comments below the comic, instead of 0.
At this point, I have a workaround, and I don’t want to go too far down the rabbit hole of changing browser settings. Instead, I’ll likely move my comics tabs over to Firefox while leading my news tabs on Edge. Separating comedy from tragedy, I guess.
In his dream about the future, he sees that no matter what’s going from nice weather to the apocalypses, all anyone does is stare at their screens. Seems like he’s seeing the future pretty clearly.
I took the Wizard of Id comic in a slightly more political direction: that despite increasingly severe natural disasters, including rising floodwaters (presumably caused by climate change), he’s focused on the distraction of the day. But it would be unusual for Wizard of Id to come down on that side of the political divide, I think.
From comments, I gather there has been a recent ad that caused some controversy.

I use Mac Chrome for GoComics. I click on the thought-balloon icon and a full-page popup shows the comments.
Brian: I gather that Sydney Sweeney is an actress and American Eagle makes jeans. I hadn’t heard of either.
But if you really want screwed up comments – go to Comics Kingdom. I can no longer even find the comments. Anyone got a pointer?
I don’t even have an account and CK, but I don’t have any trouble finding the comments. Under each strip on a comic’s page there should be, on the left, COMMENTS [X] where X is the number of comments. You click that and get a popover window with comments.
