If this was a storyline comic, I would think this was just a setup day for more hilarity in the days following. But that isn’t the way this strip works.

No idea at all what’s going on. It reads like it’s written in code. Like these are two spies giving multiple passphrases.
I interpret this as the kids (incorrectly) believe that since their dad has a soft spot, he has a weakness they can exploit. I don’t know if I’m right, but it made me chuckle.
Yes, Paul has it: the kids are compiling a file on their parents like the CIA compiles a file on a person of interest. Finding a weakness that can be exploited is valuable information in that business.
