Seems that this old woman has buried her husband alive but she can’t leave until he is completely dead because of their wedding vows. I’m really not sure, PMP is a weird comic.

I don’t think her outfit has anything to do with the joke.

I read it very different than the first commenter but I don’t see the outfit as important either. I read it as a little marital Boomer-humor: The dead guy is annoyed that he can’t get away from his wife even after dying. So very annoyed that he speaks up, despite being dead. If he were buried alive I’d expect some physical indication, like freshly-turned dirt instead of grass and perhaps a shovel leaning nearby.

I suspect Lee or his colorist may have felt the panel looked kind of dull and just overcorrected with the jacket.

How about: the wife wants to finally be rid of her husband (the weird outfit possibly being a clue as to why), but he’s still coming around, so she’s reminding him that their vows ended with death parting them.

After reading the previous comments, and a little pondering: Is the dead guy “breaking up” with his wife (widow)?

I’m not even convinced, that the person standing by the grave is an old woman. Could be the husband standing there and the wife in the grave.

Either way, very confusing, and the Santa Claus outfit doesn’t help (yeah, I agree, that was probably the colorist going wild.)

I detect boob on the weird-coated living person. I’m therefore with camp “husband wants to literally Rest In Peace” and is shooing away his widow.

If you look at other PMP comics the cartoonist draws this same woman wearing different clothes but her hair in the back is a bun. I think this is definitely supposed to be a woman and not some eccentric guy. Old people often have terrible taste in fashion. This ugly coat and hat is something I could believe an octogenarian woman might wear.

I too thought it was a man at first, but agree that it’s a woman. I also think LarK has the gist of the joke (?).

@Keera: “I detect boob on the weird-coated living person”. Yes, I see what you mean, but Vic Lee’s women are usually much more obviously women.

Anonymous – My mom is now 96 and I assure that she would not wear any coat which looked like that – before or now – Brown, black or navy were the coat colors she would/does think to be correct.

I saw it as a man, but after careful re-inspection, I think Keera Ann Fox is right.

And the outfit reminds me of 19th-Century Santa Clause/Sint Nick/Pere Noel depictions. That doesn’t help me get the joke, however.

Recalling an old magazine one-panel. A couple of angels, male and female, are walking around heaven, being followed by an angry female. The male turns around and says, “Lois, the exact words were till death do us part.”
