Timing is everything. Probably when Schwadron drew this, the stock market was still going up. Since then, the story has been different and volatile would be the best description.
Is there a non-Arlo interpretation of this joke?

What’s in the glass? Hemlock?
Is the joke a) a satirical poke at people having a tendency to treat every unpleasant condition in their lives (ie poor stock performance) as a medical problem that can be fixed with drugs, b) the ‘drug’ is escaping into a simulated reality where you can pretend your stocks are just fine, and c) ironically calling Sims a “new” drug when people have been doing this for decades?
I dunno’. That’s what I got out of this. Not really a knee-slapper.
It’s early and I’m confused. I don’t see the Arlo connection, I don’t see any reason to think it’s commenting on current events. Stan, I’m pretty sure Sims is the guy’s name. All I got from it is, as Stan says, the doctor prescribing drugs for something unrelated to medicine.
“Sims” may be a play on “Hims”, a company that sells erectile dysfunction drugs.
My (not quite a lol) was that no matter what you tell a doctor, they’ll want to prescribe something.
Sims is the patient’s name.
The doctor is holding a pill jar.
The jar contains what should be colorized to look like little blue pills.
Arlo, yes.
Sims is indeed the name of the character. He is a recurring character in this comic and is similar to Ziggy where bad things happen to him for no reason. I think what the doctor is holding is a urine sample that Sims has provided. It could also be a semen sample but I don’t want to think about that. The good news is that there’s a pharmaceutical that is going to help him.
Anonymous, if that’s a urine sample, those dark blobs in it are pretty worrisome! I think it’s supposed to be pills. The orange-ish vial supports that (while acknowledging that the cartoonist isn’t always in on the coloring, so that might be bogus).
Glad we cleared up who Sims was! My first thought was related to The Sims, the game from ~20 years ago (though still going), which obviously made zero sense.
I had thought it was a glass, but yes, it’s the same color as a lot of pill bottles (probably filtering out light that could damage some pills). Stan‘s “(a)” suggestion is probably what the cartoonist intended.
The new drug is a suppository which is why Sims isn’t looking very excited. The doctor has a GoPro strapped to his head and is recording the whole thing for his viral YouTube channel.
Hey, head mirrors still exist.
Also, did anyone else see Sims as having three legs at first?
