Yes the implication is that the snakes hissing mimics the sound of fajitas being cooked on a skillet.

Medusa was originally a beautiful woman who was transformed into a Gorgon after Poseidon rapes her. Later she is beheaded while sleeping and her severed head is used as a weapon. She’s been the subject of masterpieces by artists like Caravaggio.

There’s a lot of history to forget between the origins of Medusa in Greek Mythology and this newspaper cartoon about how snakes hissing mimics fajitas sizzling.

That was certainly Ovid’s take on Medusa. Earlier poets had her just a monster, and others such as Euripides had only a single Gorgon, born of Gaia as an ally to the giants. Greek mythology is basically the same thing as superhero comics – no real canon, just increasingly punched-up retellings. There’s no reason to cling to a particular version as correct any more than there is to pick a particular Spider-Man continuity.

Anyway, yeah, a bunch of snakes hissing could sound like Fajitas sizzling. Close enough for the joke at least.
