…and I (and Chemgal, who contributed it) don’t get it either:
OK, Luddie wants out, and Janis stops her. But…where’s the joke?

In the bottom left panel, Ludwig gets past her foot, meaning Janis’ blocking skills aren’t as good. Ludwig doesn’t take advantage of the opportunity before Janis gets the block in place. This is a maneuver I’m all-to familiar with.
As Rob says. Janis is too slow to really block Ludwig, who in turn is too slow to take advantage of the opening.
The second panel is the key. She opens the door and knows she has to stick her foot in, because she knows who’s on the other side of the door.
Not a CIDU to any cat owner 😆
Luddie is a “her”? I always thought he was a boy.
Has Janis’s hair been varying between grayish and brownish lately?
I grew up with cats, had cats of my own. I certainly understood that the cat wanted out, but still don’t get it. Maybe Rob W’s got it, but it seems pretty weak.
A while back, Janis decided to stop coloring her hair. So yes, the color is changed.
@Pete, I’m also pretty sure the cat is a “him,” based on how I recall Arlo and Janis referring to it. @Keera, I understand that Janis is blocking the cat from escaping, but not the joke; can you explain that part?

Chemgal, see Andrew Millar’s explanation.
