I think it’s simpler than that. “Let’s go in and if we just happen to order the pie, so be it.”

Yes, or including “Probably they have another whole pie back in the fridge and can start it for us.”

I agree with Powers. It’s highlighting the way people use the phrase, “Let’s see what happens,” even though they know exactly what will happen.

I agree with Carl. If it was just about wondering if they will order pie or not, it would have shown an entire pie. Since there is just one piece left, it is about seeing who ends up with it.

Nah, I think it’s just a case of “we really shouldn’t” and then rationalizing. I mean, just going in there doesn’t mean we HAVE to get something, does it? We’ll just have a look and a smell.

I agree with padraig. I’m sure there’s more banana cream pie than is shown in the window. Otherwise the sign would have come down by now.

Banana cream pie is a guilty pleasure if you are watching your calories as people of this age and size often are.

Here is how I think the conversation started.

    “Doesn’t that look good!”
“Yes but we shouldn’t. We really shouldn’t.”
“You’re right. But there’s no harm in looking.”
    “Right, no harm in looking.”
    “I bet it smells wonderful.”
“We won’t know if we stay out here.”
    “But we shouldn’t go in.”
“We’ll just go in, look around, take a sniff and walk out.”
“What if we don’t walk right out?”
“I haven’t had banana cream pie in so long!”
“Let’s just go in and see what happens.”

My take is that in itself banana cream pie isn’t very exciting, but with the huge banner and the singular slice in the window seemingly making it appear something special, they’re still somewhat skeptical….

    Maybe.

As an aside, that one slice could be one of those inedible replicas often placed in displays, rather than the one slice they’d be fighting over/enjoying as suggested in posts above.

    Maybe.

I just had dessert, but now I wish I had pie.

I agree with Brian. Look at the ingredients. Flour, made from wheat, a grain so wholesome its products are called the “staff of life”. Eggs, loaded with protein. Milk, nature’s most nearly perfect food. And fruit. We are encouraged to eat several servings of fruit every day.
