Boise Ed notes: “Maeve can’t give it to Emma because Emma would love it? That makes no sense at all to me, possibly because I’m male.”
This one’s not a CIDU, but a Christmas Eve Geezer Alert sent in by Dan Sachs.

I would translate that “if it comes from Mom it can’t be cool” – so while Emma would love the sweater, not if Mom chose it for her. Less “female” and more “teenager” – or possibly “female teenager”.
I puzzled a little over the phrasing – “preclude” is not the right word here – but came to roughly the same conclusion as JJ(1). Except, unfamiliar with the characters, I thought the blonde character was dad, not mom.
I agree about the ‘teenager hates what mom likes’ idea, but Emma is too old for that. Generally speaking, when young women start having to pay for their own clothes, mom’s preferences seem much cooler.
I notice Santa’s sleigh has a steering wheel, gearshift, and turn signal stalk.
By that logic, nothing Mom gives her would be acceptable.
I think there’s some truth to that for teenage girls, Ed, unless the gift happens to be something she asked for specifically, or itself directly exchangeable for goods and/or services. Although Chak tells us Emma isn’t a teen, just kind of a jerk.
A similar idea, Luann can’t like the sweater because Brad got it for her.
(This is a retro cartoon, but in the current feed with today’s date and a note from the writer.)
