The shortest day of the year…

… will occur tomorrow (well, at least up here in the northern hemisphere):

Most countries in the temperate zones have one 23-hour day every year’s calendar, but it falls in Spring, not in Winter.

As opposed to both of the “Born Loser” strips, Frazz is referring here to net sunlight, rather than total duration.

P.S. Jef Mallett lives in Michigan, and must be very familiar with how short the days get in northern latitudes. On the other hand, Berlin is located ten degrees farther north than Detroit, so Mallett doesn’t have that much to complain about.

Of course, the shortest day of the year is followed immediately by the longest night:

Seems as if it’s only when talking about solstices do we refer to hours of daylight as “day”. Which causes this confusion that comics love to exploit. But it would be so much better to be unambiguous.

Our minister sent out a survey: “What is the real Spirit of Christmas to you?”

    My answer:

“I want to say that the spirit of Christmas is “Jim Beam”, but you likely had something else in mind.

Christmas is celebrated just after the winter solstice, even though the literal text of the Gospels has it more likely in the spring.  The winter solstice is the darkest time of the year.  So I think the spirit of Christmas is that even when things seem darkest, there is hope for peace on earth is we can all be people of good will.”

Sure, it’s called “Daylight Savings Time”, when the switch causes a 23-hour day. It is offset in October with a 25 hour-day when people move back to normal time.

On what’s left of rec.arts.sf.written, there was a discussion about the solstice. One guy complaining that he was tired of the sunset later every day. Someone pointed out that right now, the sunset is getting later. The guy argued that the shortest day wasn’t until the solstice. It had to be explained that those were two different, although related things.

Amusingly, that guy related that he was booted off a science fiction reddit because the moderators thought he was a bot.
