.

And let’s try out a pairing of some bacon with some fur:

This one was already a massive anachronism when it was originally published, and is even more so now:

VW Things are still around as vintage (or even Antique, at this point…over 50 years old).

That said, when the Thing first came out, I believe all of the Things shown were part of pop culture.

@ Dvandom (4) – They may be around, but they are hardly well-known. VW made only 90 thousand of those cars worldwide (in comparison to 21 million Beetles), and sold “The Thing” in America for only three years (1972-1975). In contrast to that, The Cat in the Hat has become a timeless classic, The Addams Family has been resurrected in four movies and three TV series, and (besides countless comic books) The Thing has appeared in three movies in the past 20 years (and will appear in three more in the next three years). Yes, all of the occupants were well known when that VW model went on the market, but by the time Parisi drew that comic in 2010, only avid VW fans would remember the car.

I well remember the Kübelwagen “Thing,” and the Marvel guy, but the two red-shirted characters are a mystery to me.

I well remember the Kübelwagen “Thing” and the Marvel guy, but I’ve no idea about the two red-shirted characters.

@ Boise Ed (7 & 8) – Thing 1 & Thing 2 were accomplices that The Cat in the Hat brought in to “have fun”, but ended up nearly destroying the kids’ house. See the second paragraph of the plot summary in the Wikipedia link. Parisi has done an excellent job of rendering Dr. Seuss’s artwork, and including the kite was a nice, authentic touch.

P.S. My point above (@5) was only that the comic was anachronistic: I did not mean to imply that it wasn’t good: indeed, I still enjoyed it. 🙂

And to make Things REALLY anachronistic,
They were on their way to see James Arness as an alien carrot at the drive-in theater.
