That “red” hair is the second massive coloration fail we’ve seen in two days.
True. But great job drawing the rust!
I thought that could be part of the joke. He used to be a legit redhead, but it has faded – even while another reason for the Rusty nickname has developed. However, this would work better if he were now a slightly reddish gray, rather than the yellow shown.
Whitewall tires…classy.
CIDU: Comments I don’t understand. That looks like a natural redhead shade on my screen. The same color as Conan O’Brien’s hair.
Andrew, the various comments may not have been all about the same comic. Indeed, as there are 3 cartoons in the posting, there may be up to 3 being commented on!
Phsiii and I both mention Rusty or rust, which have to do with the top comic, the Cornered.
I’m not sure which one Kilby’s comment refers to, but I suspect it might be about Hagar’s bright red hair, in the middle comic.
And your remark about natural redhead shade and Conan seem closest to fitting with Dustin at the bottom — though I would call his hair simply brown.
Nah, I meant Cornered. I don’t completely trust my old eyes, so once I got home from work I brought it up on desktop and used the color picker to compare. . . and Conan’s is definitely darker and much more brown (in RGB, they have almost identical red and green, but Conan has a lot more blue). Still, the color is definitely orange. I think perhaps the car’s colors create an optical illusion that makes it look yellower.
On a whim, I looked at a syndicated cartoonist’s color guide to compare, and it’s one of two or three shades of orange that in my opinion could pass for natural hair at all.
@ Mitch (6) – My comment about “red” hair was directed at the only strip where the color is significant to the gag and even mentioned in the dialog. The yellow-orange color on his comb-over is exactly the same hue as the car directly under his elbow.
P.S. Grawlix (4) – Those tires are at best brownwalls.
@Kilby, so which one are you talking about?
The first one, of course! There is only one comic that mentions red hair in the dialog (under the drawing). My comment @1 was not intended to be cryptic, and I have no idea how anyone could understand that I was talking about Hagar. Hagar’s hair is (as usual) red, but that has nothing to do with the jokein that strip.
I’ve been glancing through some Hagar cartoons, and (1) can confirm this bright red is how his beard is always colored (when the strip is in color), and (2) I have not yet hit on one where his helm is removed and we can see if he still has matching hair.
I appreciate Andrew’s idea of checking colors, and used an eyedropper tool to find that Hagar’s beard comes in at #C7001A or #D6001B, while Lucky Eddie’s tunic is brighter at #F3002A. I thought it might be just an artistic effect, with Hagar’s beard looking a darker red only because of the black lines within it — but it really is.
Kilby, did Grawlix’s ironic or sarcastic comment fly past you uncaptured? The tires probably were at one stage classy whitewalls, but time has hit them with discoloration just as it attacked the body with rust.
Well then I can apologize for misunderstanding your comment in #1. But I still plead not-guilty to the level of stupidity you impute to my mistake in your #8. :-)
In #1:
That “red” hair is the second massive coloration fail we’ve seen in two days.
But that doesn’t include anything about the only strip where the color is significant to the gag or even mentioned in the dialog which you introduce in #8 as the signs that any non-moron should have recognized as meaning that your #1 had to be about the Cornered at the top.
I think the first color fail Kilby is referring to is the one I mentioned in the Astronomical Golfing Errors thread
@Danny (11) Hagar has taken of his helmet before, and he’s bald.
@ larK (13) – Correct, that why I said “in two days”.
@ Mitch – Please accept my apologies, I did not intend to be insulting, I was just getting frustrated. Both you (@3) and Phil (@2) understood my comment (@1) perfectly, and you both responded to it as it was intended, but then you recomplicated everything @6.
Well Kilby, you weren’t the only one affected by my slow understanding. I guess I found it too…. cute to ignore that apparently with three cartoons to choose from, we had comments seeming to pick out the three different comics for roughly the same formulation. I also got Andrew wrong. But then his correction was direct — <<Nah, I meant 1 not 3>> — not requiring another interpretative step (that “colorist error” would mean a color should be inferred or specified in a cartoon’s text).
