“Open this pit up” generally refers to asking people to enjoy partaking in a mosh pit, not the pits of hell. I thin the speech balloon might have got a little lost though, it makes more sense if the witch is speaking.
I read “open this pit up” as cleaning and rearranging cluttered living space to make it more open. But that is a pretty weak joke and doesn’t exactly explain why someone fell into the pits of Hell. But I refuse to try too hard to make sense of Xunise’s work: It frequently seems to have an idiosyncratic meaning rather than a “joke” per se.
That Open Pit Original used to be my first choice of grocery-store BBQ sauces, later supplanted by other flavors of the same brand; and then later the Sweet Baby Ray brand, in several of their flavors.
Back in the day, there weren’t a lot of selections in the BBQ sauce category. A popular sauce around here was a local brand, “Maull’s”. A few years back, the company was going out of business, and there was some consternation, but it was bought up and continued.
