I had suggested (on gocomics) that it’s a “cows have four stomachs” joke, but I didn’t feel great about it.
I would have submitted it here, but it feels like the last 3 I’ve submitted have been Andertoons, and I didn’t want to feel like I was picking on him.
@ Darren – You are exactly right: this Andertoons comic (from May 16th) appeared in a comment within Bill’s “Peeling Out Too Fast” draft, which I just happened to schedule for the day that the Andertoons comic appeared. Since the post was of course not tagged “Andertoons”, it wasn’t easy to find.
I think the best answers had to do with the so-called four stomachs of a cow. (According to sources, it’s more like one stomach with four chambers, providing different functions.) The four bottles of pink bismuth are for those four stomachs — and let us not ask exactly why that is and how it works. :-)
@ Mitch (3) – Only after reading your comment did I realize that the cow is buying exactly four bottles. Because of the arrangement, I had previously thought that it was supposed to be a six-pack.
Visually it’s indeterminate, and could be, say, a six-pack with some bottles blocked. But ground-level there are four visible and no partials peeping out.
I think it would have worked better if the four bottles had been arranged separately, instead of in a bunch.
Four, six, all we really need is “multiple.” In any case, a whole bottle for each stomach sector seems excessive. But then, this wasn’t meant to be a medical treatise.
Ah, that it was posted in a comment thread makes sense. Thank you for the reference, Kilby.
Looked at it before started reading & my mind immediately went to “4 stomachs, 4 bottles”.
Didn’t we already discuss this one a bit?
