    Okay, I see some – –

    Styles or “schools” of art
Tools and materials. Koh-I-Noor, named for a famous jewel, is a brand of pen, for instance.
    Techniques

That does leave a few that I don’t recognize, but guess there are none that relate to food or appetizers rather than art. (Casein I think is derived from dairy somehow, but could be here for its chemical or physical properties as a powder)

Hmm, WP removed the dashes I had at the beginnings of those three lines. It was supposed to be like a bullet-point list.

I agree with Dana (1): there are plenty of “art” terms, and nothing at all that refers directly to an appetizer, and casein is indeed a milk protein that is a component of a “fast-drying, water-soluble medium used by artists” (a type of tempera paint).

P.S. As it happens, I’ve never really cared for Duffy’s artwork. He has a tendency to draw grotesk figures with impossibly large noses, which just seem ugly to me. Nevertherless, for all of those Duffy fans out there (I’m talking about you, mitch!), I’d like to mention that The Daily Cartoonist reported yesterday that Duffy now has a new Substack page entitled “Lightning”, with an interesting recent post about “Cartoonstipation” (this is just the first two panels):

P.P.S. Visit Duffy’s Substack to see the complete comic.

Yes, casein can be used as a wash, similar to gouache. I’ve sort of heard most of these, but I don’t recognize Dean’s List.

I like the bird, that manages to say “Op”. (For those who may have forgotten, optical shortened to op art was indeed a school / style / practice.)

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about this drawing is that it appears to have been executed on a fairly coarse grid of elementary school quality graph paper. Perhaps his supply of Bristol board was running low?

P.S. I can’t tell whether the vertical gutter is the result of a fold, or an artifact of scanning the image. The horizontal grid lines jump at that point, but the artwork seems adequately aligned, if a bit fuzzy to the immediate left (which would seem to indicate a scanned fold).

@ mitch (7) – It must have been a color scan, otherwise the grid lines from the notebook would not have shown up in light blue.† Besides the signature and four or five easily visible red dots (all near the edges of the two pages), there is also a progression of red “schmutz” stretching horizontally across both pages, at about the same level as the red dot right below the “Koh-i-noor” balloon.

P.S. † – Many monochrome copiers and/or scanners are (or were) designed to ignore light blue entirely, as an artefact of (now archaic) editing customs, wherein editorial changes were noted in blue pencil.

When I loaded LarK’s page, all the “Hors d’oeuvres” subject lines made FireFox ask if I wanted to translate the page from French.

Danny sez: I like the bird, that manages to say “Op”.
And along those lines, it’s even better that a dog is saying “Bauhaus”…

The title “hors d’oerves” (looks like hor’s, even) instead of “hors d’oeuvres” is just a typo or means something?

Whether it’s a typo or not, I don’t understand what hors d’oeuvres have to do with the drawings or the text.

Powers, I think it’s nothing big, just that the scene is like a cocktail party or maybe reception (including an art show opening), and what do people eat along with their drinks at that sort of function?

@ GiP (11) – I noticed the spelling difference between the post headline and the comic when I was writing my comment @3, but was too lazy to look it up and wrote “appetizer” instead. It would be unfair to expect perfect orthography in a notebook sketch, but I was surprised to learn that among a pair of other misspellings (of “pointillism” and “Winsor & Newton“), there was one term that I thought was a cutesy error, but it proved to be absolutely correct: “X-Acto” (up until just now I always thought it was spelled “Exacto”).

@ Danny Boy (15) – If you were to add panko to regular wall paint, the effect would be very similar to German “Raufaser-Tapete” (meaning “rough fiber wallpaper”):

P.S. The effect is produced by finely shredded wood particles between the paper layers. This stuff is by far the most popular wall covering throughout Germany, because the consistent texture makes it much simpler to achieve an acceptable surface appearance with brick and block construction, as well as drywall. I’ve never lived in an apartment or house here that didn’t have it.

The overwritten “N” is clearly visible, but I have no idea what the uncorrected word would have been.

Don’t know if this too far off the subject (if so, my apologies) but speaking of artists –

A local shopping mall which is about 95% empty of stores which are in business is having its second artist featured – no, not local artists.

They had “Beyond Van Gogh, the Immersive Experience” which was suppose to leave (per the website) early in September. Per local commercials (but not findable online by me) they are suppose to be having a new similar setup now of Monet.

The show seems to be large scale (room height) versions of his painting on glass or such and are lit from behind. One walks through the episode in the dark. I presume it is suppose to seem that one is walking through the paintings.

    website showing this –

We had gone to this mall to see a (local) craft store which was suppose to have opened there. We did not find it, but did find lots of empty stores. For those who know Long Island – this is the mall adjacent to the old Fortunoff’s store (where I worked my way through college selling jewelry). there is a long list of stores,, restaurants and a food market on their website – but there was maybe 4 stores (including the food store) and 2 restaurants. (As far as I know the Fortunoffs store – 3 floors – is still empty.)
