I agree with Chak. For similar reasons, I like “Mutts” a lot, except when McDonnell gets onto his vegan/PETA propaganda soapbox.

P.S. Tastes differ: In a recent post on his new “Substack” chat group (called “The Gene Pool“‡), Gene Weingarten (one of the authors of “Barney & Clyde”) mentioned his three least-favorite comics. I was a little suprised by his answer: “The worst strips The Post runs are Mutts, which only tries to be cute, not funny, and Beetle Bailey, which lives in the 1950s and hasn’t had a thing to say in years, and Lio, which has one joke it repeats daily. Lio likes monsters. Yay.” If Weingarten feels that way about Mutts, I’d rather not know about his opinion of Macanudo. On the other hand, given his opinions about Beetle Bailey and Liō, I would expected to see Garfield in his list, which combines both of those “qualities” he mentioned.

P.P.S. ‡ – In addition to interesting commentary, “The Gene Pool” is also the new home of “The Invitational”, following the Post’s surprise decision (in December) to eliminate both its weekend “Magazine” and the (nearly 30-year old) “Style Invitational”, which is always very entertaining to read.

P.P.P.P.S. Although Gene (continually) appeals to readers to upgrade to “paid” subscriptions, this is not required at all: reading the Invitational is completely free of charge. You only need to upgrade to a “paid” subscription to the “Gene Pool” if you want to compete in the contests.
