Tolkien once mentioned that he put the “scary bit” involving the spiders in Mirkwood into “The Hobbit” specifically to frighten one of his own kids (Michael). Much later (during WWII), he sent early drafts of “The Lord of the Rings” as a serial to his son Christopher, who was an RAF pilot.
