When I was in maybe 2nd or 3rd grade I hadn’t really absorbed the differences among actually religious carols, traditional but not very overtly religious carols, and pop music with Christmas elements that was in effect “traditional” as Christmas song. It was all one bucket, and as far as I knew was fixed and just a part of the firmly established tradition.

But then … suddenly … we learned that there was a new Christmas Carol! How could that be? Had an official body accepted it into the canon? Had there been any investigation into how this could happen?

It was sort of on the religious side, since it mentioned the Baby Jesus, in some guise. But it had a sort of modern melody, and a storytelling approach. It was this “Little Drummer Boy”.

Little drummer boy – I hear (read) the title and little Richie Petrie singing it on the Alan Brady show (Dick Van Dyke Show) one year is heard in my head.
