I have a memory (OR a story that my parents told me, thereby inducing a memory) of visiting a zoo in Amsterdam, holding my teddy bear. An ostrich reached out of the enclosure and pecked at the bear’s eye – I screamed, supposedly. (Sometime when I was younger than six years; I had my sixth birthday on the SS Rijndam, coming to America. Complete with Sinter Klaas.)
