Not sure it’s anything more than Arlo doesn’t mind being seen by the neighbors in his boxers than Janis does, and she had a need.

    :)

I think ryanberickson has it, but I did need him to explain it to me. Arlo got Janis’ pants out of the dryer because she didn’t want to be seen by neighbors in her underwear. Being seen in his underwear was no big deal to him (hence the dance).

So… they are doing laundry;. And they are doing *all* their laundry to the point that they don’t have *any* clothing to wear not even their bathrobes; Janice needs a pair of pants (but not a blouse– just *one* pair of pants) for some unstated purpose; but cant get it because of the window (which doesn’t have blinds that can be controlled from the side out of sight); so she asks Arlo who doesn’t mind to get it; and because he likes to tease he exaggeratedly does a little boxer short dance in front of the window to show he doesn’t care who is looking; and Janice is grateful and doesn’t bean him for the dance teasing?

The funny thing is I think this does occur regularly in many households. But it really shouldn’t.

Woozy has it except I don’t think Janis is grateful. It’s a sarcastic “Thank you!!”, and I imagine it being followed by an unspoken “It’s about time!”.

“Woozy has it except” … except I had to take it from ryanberickson.

I was pointing out the many flaws or gaps one has to take to accept this…. Yet in typing my answer it occurred to me that despite all the little flaws of logic that say this can’t occur it… somehow does occur. Frequently.

Woozy: I don’t think it requires such a complicated set of circumstances. They clothes that Janice wants are in the dryer. She might have other clothes that she could wear, but she doesn’t want to get dressed just to walk a few rooms, and then change her clothes afterwards. Or to close a bunch of blinds. Faster to have Arlo get them.

I think you’ve got the correct interpretation, but when I first saw this I interpreted it as Arlo going into pretend “hunter” mode, braving the wilds of the house to bring back the coveted slacks in triumph.

I don’t think the “Thank you” was sarcastic. But she was upset at Arlo’s showing off in the window, mocking her dislike of crossing that “dangerous” space.

Blinds, shminds. The only windows with blinds in our WI house were in the three bedrooms and bathroom. The only windows with blinds here are . . . none. No curtains, either. I have better things to do than open and close blinds and curtains – like sit in my office and read the comics and CIDU!

I agree that the main joke here is that the self-conscious Janice did not want to be potentially seen in her underwear, but Arlo is willing to flaunt the fact.

A contrived or complicated setup is not required. Many current driers have a steam refresh setting to remove wrinkles: You stick your pants in the drier, hit steam refresh, and go take your shower. 10 minutes later your pants are delightfully wrinkle-free (the drier steams the clothes and then tumbles them dry). It’s particularly useful for materials that don’t particularly like being ironed.

Of course, by grabbing the pants in one hand, Arlo is probably wrinkling them again.

    >>But Janice has no bathrobe?
Maybe it is in the laundry. Maybe she’s in a hurry. Maybe she just did her nails. Maybe she just asked Arlo to do it, and Arlo is just using the opportunity to demonstrate that he is not self-conscious about his appearance as Janice is.

    >>And why is Arlo also in his underwear?
That one is easy… and he’s getting dressed, too.

BA – I thought they were in the dryer. Oh,wait, I forgot front door washers are more common now. The opening a front door made me think of a dryer. Oh, well, but if they were not in the dryer – she would be putting on wet pants.

Stumbled back to this one accidentally, but looking at it afresh, I really think Arlo went parading off to get his own jeans– maybe to show Janis how it’s done– but accidentally grabbed Janis’s. Her thank you is sincere, since she doesn’t know his error, and his expression says “d’oh!”
