I understand the Wizard of Oz references, but Holmes? I must be missing some cultural reference.

Things that baffle me in this strip:
I don’t think those are munchkins. One has antennae, one is a leprechaun, and the third is wearing a Hawaiian shirt. One of the original munchkins wore a green suit, but he wasn’t a redhead in a top hat. That guy is hiding a pot o’ gold.
A pigeon in a top hat and tie.
Sherlock Holmes? Oliver Wendell Holmes? That’s all I can think of. I’m not aware that either wore jeans and work boots.
A shovel. Holmes Beach banned metal shovels this year but I can’t see any way to square that with the comic.
A giant flower. I’d buy that the artist was just going for Wonderland-style stuff but with all the general weirdness I’m not sure. There weren’t giant flowers in Wonderland as far as I recall. It probably isn’t important. But I am bothered by how it interacts with perspective, being both in front of and behind the house.
@Andre Millar: Wonderland or Oz? I only see the latter.
I’m wondering why the “witch” has enormous boots instead of ruby slippers. Is there a brand of boots called Holmes?
Holmes on Homes is Mike Holmes.
He’s huge, and has a line of workboots.
Consul has the reference. Holmes on Homes is a renovation show where the host (Holmes, don’t remember his first name) helps people who’ve had bad/incomplete work done by a contractor. Dorothy and the munchkins are concerned since the house fell on the wrong person.
Mike Holmes is Canadian but his shows Holmes on Homes and Holmes Inspection (as well as a few short-lived sequels) aired on American cable channel HGTV for many years. He’s a good guy, really knows his stuff, though he’s getting longer in the tooth these days. I follow him on Facebook.
Oz, yes, I misspoke so early.
IMDB said “Holmes is a warmhearted, straight-shooting regular guy who tells it like it is, especially when it comes to messy builders and the sloppy, lazy jobs they leave behind.” Perhaps one of those sloppy jobs fell on him (in the comic).
Also, there were some big flowers at Dorothy’s landing site.

A search turned up a Canadian TV show, “Holmes on Homes” so this may be that turned around.

No idea about the two characters beside Dorothy.
