One of the hopes of the Lewis and Clark expedition was to find a good trading route from the Mississippi watershed to the Pacific. In the east, the Erie Canal would link the Atlantic port of New York to the Great Lakes, with some locks (particularly around Lockport). Farther west, it was clear that around what would become Chicago you could build a canal to link the Great Lakes and the Mississippi through low-lying land. There were even plans to link Chesapeake Bay and the Ohio River at Pittsburgh, although the C&O canal only got at far west as Cumberland, MD before the age of railroads overtook it.
The Rockies, though, were much higher and did not have a natural break.
What did Lewis say to Clark when they got to the Pacific? Long time no sea.
Why not Lewis and Martin?
According to Jerry Lewis they decided to list their names in alphabetic order. They also decided to always be billed using their first and last names. Thus they became Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.
“Lewis and Clark” is metrically more satisfying than “Clark and Lewis”. “Lewis and Clark” sounds like the beginning of a dactylic (or anapestic) poem or song (DAH da da DAH da da DAH da da DAH) while “Clark and Lewis” is a pair of trochees and sounds more choppy (DAH da DAH da DAH da DAH da).
Lewis was a captain and Clark was a second lieutenant. So Lewis comes first because he outranked Clark.
Jascha Heifetz, the violinist, teamed up with cellist Gregor Piatigorsky and pianist Arthur Rubinstein to form a trio. They all had big egos, but Heifetz’s ego was probably the biggest. Traditionally for classical piano trios, the pianist’s name goes first, then the violinist, then the cellist. Heifetz didn’t like this and insisted on having his name first. Rubinstein refused and said “If God played the violin, the trio would be Rubinstein, God and Piatigorsky.” The trio did not stay together very long.
They should have gone with a name derived from a pun or portmanteau instead.
