Grawlix – There was supposedly a Pope Joan in the 850s AD – but not officially listed and who knows how or why the story comes down to us and how true it is.
On Pope Joan, “The story was widely believed for centuries, but most modern scholars regard it as fictional.”
A big problem with the Pope Joan story was the lack of contemporaneous accounts. The earliest were like 400 hundred years later. That’s often the case with legends of that sort.
