Mitch4 sends this in: “”It’s an excuse.” *What* is? And *what* is it excusing someone from? Is this a cartoon about bad boyfriend/husband behavior? Or mysterious doctor/nurse/doula behavior?”

Well, he’s waiting outside the maternity ward, where the doctor usually says “It’s a boy !” or “It’s a girl!”, but other than that, I got nutin’.
I meant to ask, is this one of those comics that accompanies a Carolyn Hax article?
I can see two angles on this: (1) Excuses are really hard to come up with, hyperbolically comparable to the difficulty of childbirth. (2) Having a child is the universal excuse. Need a day off? The kid is sick. Need to leave early? The kid has a karate recital. Want to avoid a party? No babysitter. Et cetera. Neither interpretation is especially funny, but there’s some humor in the presentation.
Guero, no, this is not one of those from Nick G. Though that’s an interesting association to make!
Yes, Andrew! My thoughts exactly. It’s an excuse, “it” being the baby. It’s a boy, it’s a girl, how mundane; let’s switch it up a little.
The father is in a state of exhausted but cheerful anticipation of all the excuses in his future.
I’m with Andrew and DrJayKay. They now have an excuse for lots of things. At first I thought it was mostly for the mom and an excuse for eating poorly, not exercising, etc., but it fits that the baby is an excuse for both of them for many things as Andrew noted.
An excuse to avoid sex with the partner. (Could go either way.)
It’s the cartoonist’s excuse for not coming up with a better gag.
