Dirk the Daring sends this in: “I have no idea why Garfield (in black and white?) would care about a Disneyland anywhere, let alone Abu Dhabi. I have no idea whatsoever what this is about. What am I missing?”

This is Nermal, an obnoxiously cute kitten who annoys Garfield. According to a fan site, Garfield periodically attempts to ship Nermal to Abu Dhabi, but always fails. But if anything, you’d think the news would make Nermal more favorably disposed to being sent there. He MIGHT be thinking how it’s seemingly impossible to get there, given that Garfield’s plans always fail.
I wondered about this, too, but the commenters at GoComics explained it along the same lines as bensondonald. It seems like kind of a deep cut of Garfield lore, but Reddick works or worked for PAWS, Inc., so he’s undoubtedly more clued in than I am.
It’s not a deep cut for anyone who grew up in the 80s watching Garfield and Friends. More of a running gag.
Yup, Powers is right. I still hear the “Abu Dhabi far far away” song in my head on occasion.
I can’t even hear the words “Abu Dhabi” without thinking of Nermal.
I’d forgotten all about that running gag (I haven’t read Garfield since I was a kid). I think it worked better in the ’80s than it does today.
