It hasn’t been established that Sarge regards Otto as a pet. In the first strip, Beetle calls Otto a pet, but we don’t see Sarge’s reaction to that. It may be that Sarge considers Otto as a person, or an non-pet animal, similar to a police dog, cavalry horse, or messenger pigeon.

In the second strip, Sarge states that “you’re not allowed to have pets”. Perhaps his rule is that privates can’t have pets, but sergeants can. Or, Sarge doesn’t regard Otto as a pet, and considers “pet dog” an insult.

Sarge appears to regard Otto as his equal. They wear the same badge of rank (Sergeant First Class) and have not had a promotion in some seventy years.

Are Beetle and Killer getting dressed or undressed in the first one? Either way, how are they both without pants (trousers) but wearing shoes? Is this an army thing?

I mean, even if it’s possible, you wouldn’t want to do it: all the schmutz from the bottom of your shoes now scrapes along the inside of your pants– yuck!

I find it interesting that here we are, 69 years later, and Beetle is still wearing the same checked briefs. It must be a thing to hang around the barracks in your skivvies. Of course, it’s hard to tell whether Killer has shoes, and maybe Beetle and Zero are wearing non-regulation shorts.

I’m struck by Killer’s head in the first panel. He should not be able to turn his head like that. Especially when, in the second panel and with the exact same expression, his collar indicates he has turned around.

Not comic related – but related to guessing what things mean in the strips.

We keep very odd hours. It is currently 3:24 am and we are having late night snack – which is our breakfast for the day to come as we wake late and start the day with lunch.

We have on reruns of old game show (Buzzer channel). At this time of night/morning we are watching “Concentration”.

At almost the same time I as I read this strip and its postings husband was yelling at the TV as the woman did not read the message properly and it seemed easy to him. For those who might not know this show – there is a board with numbered squares on it. One of the two contestants calls out two numbers – if the prize on each of the time match the squares “turn around” and part of the rebus puzzle under it is shown. The person has to guess what the puzzle says. (If they do not, the other person picks two squares, etc. and this continues until one of the solves the rebus or they run of out squares.)

In the same way, apparently, this day’s strip has to be guessed as to what is meant- though not be solving a rebus.
