The Elephant in the Room – some family issue that no one speaks about or deals with with satisfactorily. Perhaps the grandparents are swingers with, among others, the other couple; or their son (and daughter-in-law’s husband) is in prison for some unmentionable crime involving the kids but they insist on his innocence; or there are abyssal political and/or religious and/or flat earth and/or anti-vax differences.

narmitaj: You wrote “abyssal … differences.” Skimming it too quickly, I read “abysmal.” Either fits.

It doesn’t even have to be a metaphorical elephant. It plays as a joke about a certain kind of grandparent or other host who refuses to accommodate parents who fret about perceived hazards, ranging from bowls of unapproved candy to potentially dangerous pets. The woman regards the daughter-in-law as the problem, not the elephant.

Today I looked at a Carolyn Hax column and saw this graphic :

Interesting, I thought, she is getting illustrations from somebody besides Nick. But no, that is by Nick, despite being in color, and despite being a direct picturing of an issue in the advice column instead of a slightly askew story.
