Loodie is hoping Arlo will pull down the branch, so he can get the bird. Arlo explains that if he tries, the bird will fly.

Hey, tall buddy…So you can reach those low hanging branches and twigs? Okay! C’mon, there’s something I gotta show you! Look, it’s a BIRD, sitting on a branch just as low as the one you reached before. Now just reach up and get it down for us to play with, okay?

I hadn’t thought of that interpretation. I thought Arlo was telling Ludwig that getting to where the bird is, in time, would not be that easy. I once watched my cat creeping along a six-foot-high fence top, stalking a bird on a branch about 5-6 feet out. After 10-15 minutes, she made a perfect leap to the spot where the bird had been. (Of course, when she hit the ground, it was all “Oh, I meant to do that.”)

I think Pete’s correct in the first comment.

If that’s the case, the cartoon would have been a little clearer if Arlo said instead, “It’s not that simple.” while looking directly at Ludwig.
