According to the Wikipedia article, a review in “The Independent” described the book as “Buddhism mixed with mysticism …, a sort of New Age re-working of Zen“, but an even more indicative detail is that “When Paris Hilton was incarcerated … in June 2007, she brought with her a copy of ‘The Power of Now'”. That may not completely explain the comic, but it does explain why I have no interest in reading the book.
He’s the highly influenceable type: he’s been reading a self-help book on positive attitude and so, he’s now sporting an exaggerated positive attitude.
