I see no Arlo here… “rise” here clearly refers to just getting out of bed in the morning. Especially since they *both* have to rise. Or did Bill see some other Arlo in the comic?
I think the Arlo award is for slipping in a euphemism for another common expletive beginning with ‘f’.

Eh. I’ll give it to him, but it’s not exactly original. There are tons of headlines on the Internet that use “Holy Focaccia”. I first encountered that phrase in one of the Assassin’s Creed games set in Italy (I think it was AC II). One of the incidental female voices will sometimes shout “Holy focaccia!” is you do something shocking but not outright illegal.
It doesn’t have to be original; it just has to slip by the censors.
“Holy Shiitake Mushrooms” might also qualify, despite being old enough to vote.
Heard twice in the last two weeks: “They took us to where they said there would be a park with some animals living for public display. It wasn’t much, all they had was one dog. It was a Shih Tzu.”
Why do you all seem to assume it slipped the censors? What evidence or reason do we have that censor guidelines include botched obscenities?
The Arlo Award is because the art slipped something past the censor by distracting with all the bread-related punnery. It’s quite clear that these are two penises. The bits sticking up from the covers is the–uh–“luggage”. The “body” is under the covers. If you look closely at the blankets, you can see the swell in the blanket showing there is some length under the blanket. This is most pronounced for the one not on the phone. Because not all men are created equal. So, by putting in a lot of bread puns, a gay penises illustration got into the paper.
And here I thought the caption was going to read: “Sour dough”.
