The are criticizing his style sense. That’s all. Cargo pants and pointy shoes. That’s a capital offense in the pirate world.
I suspect this is related to the sartorial choices of the pirate on the plank. Cargo shorts are generally considered a fashion faux pas by almost everyone. Pirates apparently have a particularly sharp reaction to them.

I suppose that, to the New Yorker, fashion is as important as life and death. Sheesh.
I’m pretty sure that the cargo pants were the intended offense, but the pixie booties were definitely a distraction. It might have been easier if he had been wearing socks with Birkenstock sandals, instead.
And are the pirate crew themselves dressed without sin?
And why the black/sun glasses and the ‘blindfold’ over his mouth? I think their complaint, if that’s what it is, is about the entire ensemble.
You can put all sorts of booty in cargo shorts, though. Think, pirates! Think!
@ Andréa – The resolution is very poor, but I think it is clear that the black “glasses” (well, “glass”) is actually an eyepatch, and what you thought was a “blindfold” is just a fuzzy beard.
Is there a special shop somewhere that pirates go to to get outfitted with puffy shirts and hooks and parrots?

For where to go for pirate clothes – do a search for “pirate reenactor clothing” – yes, really! When we started in the hobby we had no idea that all sorts of reenacting clothing, other needs (props) and supplies could be purchased. Hence I have made about 90% of our clothing for reenacting. (Did buy my stays, our stockings, hats, caps and the like – and of course shoes for Robert – my black leather Keds have the right look and are barely seen under my petticoat/skirt.)
The businesses which sell to reenactors (and make a pretty “pence” doing so) are called suttlers same as the businesses which would follow the armies to sell items to the individual soldiers/officers in period. By pretty pence – my stays are the second most expensive clothing I have ever owned – only my wedding gown cost more.
