I am assuming that frequently they’ve been out in the heat and come home tired. And thought “you know, we’re so tired; let’s just go to bed”. To which they always catch themselves with “No! Don’t. You conk out for an hour or so but then you’ll just wake up in the middle of the night and you’ll *never* get back to sleep”.
So somewhere on Dec 23rd they went to some hot and exhausting Christmas Party (???????) and came home dog tired. They thought about going to bed, they did the “Oh, no. We’ll wake up in the middle of the night!” but as always they went to bed *anyway*…..
…. and woke up in the middle of the night! Oh,, no! ….
…..But then they remembered what the name of their comic strip was and dealt with it as their name implied…
And in the morning they had to ask “Hey, what was so bad about that?”

I’m assuming.
Or it means something else entirely… what do I care? I don’t live in Arlo and Janice land. (….*sigh*….)
They went out, and came home super tired, but not sleepy. So, just as if they’d stayed home in the first place, they wind up staying up late in front of the TV. Arlo is pointing out that he was happy just staying in, and staying up late in front of the TV.
I’ve also got to question the timing of this strip. Staying out late in the heat near the end of December?
I think they went to bed early, because it’s December and it’s dark and it’s romantic to go to bed early and go right to sleep. (Without doing any Arlo things in bed.) So they went to bed at 7:00 and went right to sleep and at 4 a.m. they woke up and couldn’t get back to sleep. It was back in August that they stayed out late in the heat and came in dog tired and were still tired when the alarm went off in the morning.
Maybe.
You know, sometimes Arlo & Janis is like those pictures the child psychologist shows you and tells you to make up your own story. (See “Thematic Apperception Test”.)
This one baffled me, too, but here’s a possible (partial) interpretation: Panels one and two, happy smiles implying what Arlo and Janis seem famous for, which they had time and energy to do since it’s NOT summer and they didn’t stay out in the heat until they were tired. That still leaves Panel 3 to confuse me.
Panels 1 & 2 – they go to bed shortly after dark and do Arlo & Janis things, then drift off to sleep contentedly. Panel 3 – they wake up at maybe 4 am and can’t get back to sleep. Panel 4 – since they have already Arloed, they pop some popcorn and watch movies in their jammies. Arlo approves.
I tried — not successfully — to think of it as a misplaced NYE cartoon, with them going to bed early but getting up on an alarm clock to do the midnight celebration. Sorry, it’s not really there like this.
A guess — panels one and two are last night in the winter; panel three is a flashback to the summer; panel four is Arlo stating that one sleeps better in winter when it gets dark early and then you’re under warm blankets than in the summer when it’s light late and too hot to sleep.
That’s just a guess, though.
I was wondering if 3 was a flashback to sleeping badly in summer. But then why the heck are they awake in Panel 4 if the were sleeping so well ….
DanV’s got it, I think.
Yep, DanV has it. Kind of Netflix and chill in reverse.
If DanV has it, does that mean in the summer days they are hot and tired and sleep all night but are too tired to Arlo and never really enjoy TV and popcorn? In winter they get all three *and* I feeling of a good rest?
They have a hot tub, as shown on the 12/30 NOT A CIDU posted today. That explains the “out late in the heat”. I have a hot tub, and from experience, sometimes they can refresh you and wake you up making it hard to sleep.
From discussion there, it’s seems that they probably don’t have a hot tub. It seems likely that it was a suggestion for one and subsequent reason why not.
Perhaps they are practicing the long lost custom of second sleep? When people lived by their bodies and the sun before the common use of electric lights, often (especially in winter) they would go to bed early. Then wake during the night, get up, dress, do work in the house, visit neighbors or neighbors visited them etc. or they did not get up and get dressed and did what Arlo & Janis are known for.
This is something real and we (okay, Robert) did research on it and did a presentation at our reenactment unit’s October meeting. (We take turns extending the info known by members while at our meetings – and we do go to the meetings in 21st clothing (or 20th century clothing if older than 20 years or so.)
Yeah, this one baffles me.
Okay…….
