Me, as a little kid in the supermarket: “Mom! They have Shake and Bake! Are we gonna buy it?”

Mom: “No! It’s just box full of bread crumbs!”

I just searched for “shake and bake and i helped” on YouTube, and mostly got ads from the 60’s and 70’s. So yeah, I think this is a Geezer.

I don’t see much over-the-air TV anymore so not up to date on currency of ads. (This is not scorning the content from the traditional broadcast networks, just saying I get some of those programs via other routes.)

I wasn’t sure (when this ad theme was current) why the wife’s info that it’s shake and bake was framed as some sort of admission. It’s meant to suggest there has been a tradeoff of greater convenience (or less work) against… lesser quality? Or greater expense? But why would the advertiser want to say THAT?

And compared to what? Homemade breadcrumb coating? Deep frying?

The child’s involvement I thought mostly the ad copy writers’ idea of cute finish to the story element. But on reflection it might still be a comparison over hot fat frying, which would not be safe to involve the child in.

When I looked it up, I discovered (in Wikipedia) narmitaj’s “crystal meth” reference, but there was also a list of ingredients (the stuff includes a fair amount of vegetable fat, otherwise it would not stick to the meat). However, the prize result of the search was a lead to the following page from “The Lazy Sunday Book“:

I guess they were supposed to be grilling the suspect instead.

“I thought this was a roast!”

I seem to remember two versions of this commercial: the more common one, with a little girl, and one with two girls (twins?), saying “And we helped” (as if they’d practiced saying this in unison).

But always with a Southern accent.

Presumably. Mitch, the little girl(s) shook the bag. I can see this as a good job to give a kid, making her feel useful at no risk to the herself or to the meal

@ Folly – The quality of the scan you posted was much better than that of the link that I included (which you may or may not have been able to see).
