I once saw the most horrific aftermath of a highway accident in which I could easily but fleetingly see, because I was going the opposite way, probably a dozen crumpled cars scattered across all northbound lanes, along with an overturned semi. Quite disturbing.

Turns out, when I saw it in the local newspaper the next day (yep, it was many years ago) I had witnessed the aftermath of a semi that had indeed flipped over because he took a slight curve too fast. The driver was fine.

The reason no one else was injured was because all the crumpled cars had fallen off the semi, as they were junkyard cars.

I thought as CarlFink did that the monster was smiling and the joke was that if such a dour miserable creature found the act funny it must be really good. I was going to comment that I never thought of the monster as particularly incapable of humor… but … dvandom’ “had me in stitches” is a better joke. (Yes, a dusty pun *is* a better joke than a cynical inaccurate observation)

I also thought of “the performer had him in stitches” because I thought “she made even the monster smile” was weak.

The other pun that comes to mind in connection with a monster’s response to a live show is a very old one, but probably not well enough known to form the basis of a comic. “Q. What did Frankenstein’s monster do when the emcee said to give the little girl a great big hand? A: He gave the little girt a great big hand.”

But finally I suppose that the fact that the monster still has both his hands as he exits demonstrates only that the emcee did not make such a request — not that the performance wasn’t good enough to merit “a great big hand”.
