Arlo, though possibly asleep, smelled food on Luddie’s breath and that made him hungry.
…which is, given cat food, kind of an ew for me. Weird meat – or dry nuggets that smell very vaguely meaty. Not appetizing to me, that’s for sure!
Except if you’ve ever smelled a cat’s breath after eating cat food, believe me, it does not make you hungry. It will take your appetite away, however.

Arthur has it, but as the others noted kind of ewww. But cat food breath isn’t really all that much worse than people food breath when you get down to it.
I read it slightly differently. Ludwig finishes off his food. He goes and then wakes up Arlo, who decides to get a snack. Ludwig figures, as long as Arlo is up, he can pester him for some of Arlo’s snack. It’s all a clever plan on Ludwig’s part to try to cadge some food.
