We have 24 different comics, coming up over the next 24 hours, just so nobody will accuse us of favoritism.

Arlo is being philisophical and romantic. Janis is being practical. But she also doesn’t want to say it out loud and sound like a philistine after Arlo’s outpouring.
Janis thinks there might be some mind-altering substances in the charcoal, altering Arlo’s perception of the universe around him. He sounds like he’s been inhaling a different kind of smoke than what comes from charcoal.
@ Bill – The introductory paragraph here seems to indicate that this was supposed to be the first salvo in the 24 hour barrage, but Wizard of Sheep is dated July 7th, and License managed to appear before “Caulfield’s Blood”, so I think both posts must have been misdated. I don’t mind seeing two “Project” comics a little early, but it looks like there may be two holes in the schedule later on.
Thanks, Kilby. Wizard of Sheep was supposed to be the final July 8 post, but I uploaded it with a July 7 date by mistake (and noticed just a few minutes too late)
To be fair, one mistake in twenty-four isn’t all that bad — and I pulled something else out of the queue to fill in for tomorrow’s final post.
Anything that showed up here before Wizard of Sheep was just random posts, unrelated to the 24-Hour Project.
(And I really hope the Moderation Filter behaves for the next 24 hours, because otherwise I might be busy)
@ Bill – I mentioned “License” not just because of its sudden appearance, but because it is explicitly tagged as “24-Hour Project”.
Oh. Okay… I made TWO mistakes out of twenty-four posts, I guess.
Still not a BAD batting average, is it?
@ Bill – I’m not concerned about your batting average at all, as long as you pick pinch hitters to replace the ones who ran out onto the field too soon.
Don’t worry, I have a deep bench.
Thanks for posting this, and thanks to JP for the clarifying comment . When I saw this yesterday, I thought Janis’s (mental) phrasing was a little unnatural, and could be improved as “change the charcoal”. But that would just be if she were remarking on a practical level (as Arthur #1 implies, and I was also thinking) that the coals are burning down and should be refreshed. But her phrasing works just fine with James’s reading.
@ Mitch4 – My initial reaction when I saw this was that Arlo had been sniffing lighter fluid, even though that doesn’t exactly match the caption.
Where can one buy this hemp-based charcoal?
Well, Mark, depending on which state you happen to be standing in, the answer may be closer than you think.
OTOH, since this is a hypothetical within a fictional work, it may be further away, as well.
Since I generally come on the site once a week to read the comics and posts, I work backwards from the most recent. After noticing the day of posting had not changed over a larger number of comics than usual, I said to myself – must be 24 posts day.
And as I have taught Robert to say – Meryl is always right.
