It’s just “We’re about to place you in what was just a crime scene”

The cartoonist thinks that’s a joke.

Yeah, just a giant step creepier than “Housekeeping is just finishing up with your room.”

Maybe we’re too hard on comics in looking for the “actual joke”? I think this is an actual joke, and somewhat funny, though pretty far from laugh-out-loud land.

Admittedly, execution could have been improved. A great execution makes all the difference. For an example, see Mike Peterson’s discussion on Comic Strip of the Day, https://www.dailycartoonist.com/index.php/2019/06/23/csotd-sunday-funnies/, about a superb Bizarro and how execution turned it from so-what to highly entertaining.

In this particular case, I think it would have worked better if the hotel guest looked shocked, not just impatient. And to make that work, the guest needs to be to the right of the check-in clerk, so that we see her expression as a reaction to the clerk’s statement.

See, I think the “vague annoyance that the police are taking so long cleaning up the crime scene before I can check in” kind of works.

I don’t think the police usually clean up crime scenes. The clerk could say, “almost finished processing . . .” but that wouldn’t really fit the joke.

I agree with Usual John. And with F Minus you kind of know to expect a different type of humor. Just like I don’t care much for the Longhorns, but some people apparently do. And that’s fine.

Police don’t usually clean rooms, they toss them. In this case they tossed the wrong room, and the innocent occupant is waiting for the damage to be undone.
